Discover Haedong Yonggungsa, my favorite temple in Korea. Located by the sea in Busan, this place offers amazing views, history, and a huge sense of peace!
If I had to choose one temple that truly represents the beauty and serenity of South Korea, it would undoubtedly be Haedong Yonggungsa. This place is not only my favorite temple in Busan, but in the entire country, and I believe its location by the sea has a lot to do with that.
There is something magical about hearing the constant sound of the waves as you walk along its stone pathways. Every corner here emanates a peace that is hard to describe. No matter how many times I visit, I always leave feeling renewed!
1. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT?
Choosing the right time to visit this temple can make all the difference in your experience. Each season has something special to offer:
Spring (March to May):
For me, spring is simply magical here. The weather is perfect and the cherry blossoms are close to the temple, makes you feel like you’re in a dream. It’s one of my favorite times of the year to visit, when everything seems alive and full of energy.
Summer (June to August):
Although the heat can be intense, the vibrant blue of the ocean and the sea breeze create a refreshing atmosphere. The green surroundings make the temple look more peaceful than ever.
Autumn (September to November):
The golden and red leaves give the temple a melancholic but incredibly beautiful touch. During this time, I enjoy spending more time simply contemplating the scenery and reflecting. Also the weather is super good at this time of the year.
Winter (December to February):
Even in the coldest months, Haedong Yonggungsa has a unique charm. If you’re lucky, you might see a bit of snow covering the temple roofs, creating a stunning contrast with the ocean. Be sure to bring warm clothes because it can get really cold here, and the wind can be quite intense.
2. WHAT TO DO: MY PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS
1. WALK THROUGH THE STONE BRIDGE
The stone bridge is one of my favorite spots. Crossing it while the ocean stretches out on both sides gives a sense of connection to something greater. I always pause for a moment in the middle to enjoy the sound of the waves.
The most fun part, though, is trying to toss coins into the baskets of the Buddha statues on the side of the bridge. All the locals go there to make wishes, tossing coins in hopes they’ll land and bring their wishes true! It’s so fun to watch. I’ve done it several times too—sometimes the coin goes in, and sometimes it doesn’t! It’s a bit tricky, but definitely a lot of fun!
2. CONTEMPLATE THE STATUE OF THE GODDESS GWANEUM
The statue of Gwaneum is simply breathtaking. Her serenity is contagious, and I love spending a few minutes nearby, looking out at the sea. There is something so powerful about this corner of the temple that always leaves me reflecting.
3. SUNRISE AT THE TEMPLE
I have to be honest about this—I woke up early and made my way to Haedong Yonggungsa, hoping to witness the legendary sunrise. But the sky was overcast, and I wasn’t able to see it. I was so sad about it! Still, friends who have experienced it told me it’s absolutely breathtaking—one of the most magical sunrises they’ve ever seen.
Waking up early isn’t easy, I admit, but when the first rays of sunlight paint the ocean and the temple in golden colors, every bit of effort is worth it! So check the weather forecast before going and be aware that it can suddenly change. Korean weather is a little bit crazy when getting closer to the summer!
4. LEAVE OFFERINGS TO THE SMALL BUDDHAS
One of the most touching aspects of the temple is the small Buddha statues scattered throughout different corners. Many visitors leave coins or small sweets as offerings, a tradition that symbolizes respect and gratitude. I always take a moment to observe these little details that make Haedong Yonggungsa feel even more special and meaningful!
5. TAKE A LOOK INSIDE THE TEMPLE
The temple is beautiful both on the outside and the inside. I highly recommend experiencing what happens inside, as it’s truly stunning! Often, the monks are there, and it’s something very magical to hear and see. The interior is filled with Buddha statues, and there are prayers from believers hanging from the ceiling.
6. TAKE A PICTURE WITH THE HAPPY BUDDHA
You definitely need to take a photo with the Happy Buddha! Trust me, it’s a must-do for anyone visiting the temple! It’s not just a photo opportunity, it’s a chance to connect with the good vibes the Buddha radiates. Don’t miss it!

3. WHAT TO DO NEAR HAEDONG YONGGUNGSA
1. SONGJEONG BEACH
This quiet beach is just minutes away and is perfect for relaxing after the visit. I love walking along the shore while the ocean touches my feet. If you’re lucky, you might see surfers enjoying the waves. And if you’re visiting in summer, you can even surf and rent a board right there!
2. DALMAJI PARK
This park is perfect for a quieter walk. It’s also one of my favorite spots in Busan for cherry blossom viewing (March-April) as the long street is lined with these beautiful flowers. You can take countless stunning photos along the way, and the best part is that you get to see the ocean the entire time! It’s truly a special place to experience spring!
3. HAEUNDAE BEACH
Although more well-known and crowded, it has a vibrant energy that contrasts with the peace of Haedong Yonggungsa. After a tranquil day at the temple, a stroll along Haeundae can be the perfect ending.
4. WHY BUDDHA’S BIRTHDAY MAKES IT EVEN MORE SPECIAL
If there’s a time when this temple reaches its peak beauty, it’s during the Buddha’s Birthday celebrations. During this period, the temple transforms completely. Every corner lights up with colorful lanterns, and the atmosphere fills with a spirit of community and devotion.
Personally, this is my favorite time to visit. The lanterns hanging throughout the temple create a magical visual spectacle, especially at dusk when the lights reflect on the nearby ocean. The collective prayers and Buddhist chants add a spiritual dimension that is impossible to ignore, even if you don’t practice the religion.
Walking among the decorations and stopping to observe the lanterns with wishes written by visitors always leaves me amazed by this amazing culture. It’s a reminder of the power of faith and human connection.
5. WHY HEAEDONG YONGGUNGSA IS MY FAVORITE TEMPLE
I have been fortunate enough to visit Haedong Yonggungsa in all seasons and under all kinds of weather, from sunny days to torrential rains. And I assure you, no matter the time or conditions, this temple has a magic that never ceases to amaze me.
I especially remember a day of torrential rain when only my friend and I were in the entire temple. Although we were completely soaked, the experience was unforgettable. The solitude of the place, the sound of the water falling, and the waves crashing against the rocks made that day almost surreal!
On sunny days, the temple shines with light reflecting off the ocean, and everything feels more alive. On cloudy days, it has a mysterious air that makes it even more special. Each season offers something unique, and that’s part of what makes it so special to me.
Whenever someone visited me in Busan, Haedong Yonggungsa was a must-visit. I felt like everyone needed to witness its beauty and energy. Regardless of their age, beliefs, or expectations, everyone ended up enchanted. Seeing their faces of amazement reminded me why I love this place so much and why I always return!
For me, Haedong Yonggungsa isn’t just a temple; it’s a place where nature, spirituality, and emotions come together in a way I have rarely experienced elsewhere.
