FROM HILL TO BEACHES: WHY I LOVE PIRIÁPOLIS

Enjoy stunning beaches, hike Cerro San Antonio, enjoy historical charm, and discover nearby attractions like Punta del Este and Pan de Azúcar!
I’ve always believed that Piriápolis is one of Uruguay’s most underrated places. Located between beautiful hills and the calm sea, this seaside town is an amazing place to visit and explore.
Sure, Punta del Este might grab all the attention, but Piriápolis has a charm that’s uniquely its own—more relaxed, more authentic, and, in many ways, more magical. It’s the kind of place where I can slow down, breathe in the salty air, and feel completely at ease. Let me show you why I like it so much!

1. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT?

If you ask me, summer (December to March) is the best time to visit Piriápolis. The beaches are lively, the weather is warm, and the town comes alive with locals and tourists enjoying everything it has to offer.
Walking along the rambla (coasta walk) during these months is a joy—families laughing, kids eating ice cream, and the smell of freshly made churros in the air.
It’s also the time of year when more shops are open. There are a few small bars and a big nightclub called “La Rinconada,” which is perfect if you’re looking for some weekend fun! Just keep in mind that in Uruguay, parties start much later than in other countries—most people head out around 2 a.m. after the pre-party!
That said, if you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe, spring (October-November) and fall (April-May) are amazing too. The weather is still good, and you’ll feel like you have the beaches and trails all to yourself!
Winter can be peaceful in its own way, but I have to admit it’s not my favorite season here—it’s chilly, and many attractions operate on reduced schedules.

2. THINGS TO DO

1. RELAX ON THE BEACHES
– Playa de Piriápolis: This is where the action happens. I love sitting on the golden sand with a mate (traditional drink form Uruguay) and a book in hand, watching the waves roll in. The atmosphere here is vibrant, especially during summer weekends. The sunsets are spectacular—I never get tired of watching the sky turn shades of pink and orange while the sea reflects the colors like a mirror!
Playa Hermosa and Playa Grande: These are my go-to spots when I’m looking for peace and quiet. The first one has a calming vibe, with clear waters and little crowds. Playa Grande, on the other hand, feels wilder—perfect for a long walk along the shore.
San Francisco Beach: This beach is all about fun and adventure. It’s a favorite spot for locals who love fishing, with rods often lined up along the shore. It’s also popular with surfers, so if that’s your thing, you should definitely give it a try!
2. HIKE CERRO SAN ANTONIO
Going to the top of Cerro San Antonio is one of my favorite activities in Piriápolis. The trail is easy enough for most people who prefer to walk, and the views from the top are definitely worth it. If hiking isn’t your thing, driving up is the best option.
Once at the summit, you can spend some time at the small chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony. The atmosphere is peaceful, and the panoramic view is stunning, especially at sunset! It’s one of the best viewpoints in Uruguay, offering views of both the beach and the hills!
3. EXPLORE CERRO PAN DE AZÚCAR
This place is a must for nature lovers. The hike to the top is a bit challenging, but the views are incredible. I’ll admit, I was pretty tired by the time I reached the summit, but seeing the vast countryside and the ocean in the distance made it all worthwhile.
4. ENJOY THE RAMBLA DE LOS ARGENTINOS
Walking along the Rambla de los Argentinos is where the town really comes alive. I love grabbing an ice cream (try the dulce de leche flavor—it’s my absolute favorite!) and walking along the beach. I highly recommend stopping by “El Faro”—they make the best ice cream I’ve ever had!
5. TAKE A BOAT TOUR
Boat tours from the port are a great idea. You can take a trip to Isla de Lobos to see the sea lion colony. The guides are usually locals, and their stories about the area really enrich the experience. It’s a fun way to discover a different side of Piriápolis!

3. NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

1. PUNTA DEL ESTE
Punta del Este is just a short drive away, and while it’s more upscale and bustling, it’s worth a visit. Don’t forget to stop by “La Mano” sculpture—it’s iconic and makes for great photos. Even if luxury isn’t your thing, the beaches here are stunning.
2. CASTILLO DE PIRIA
The Castillo de Piria is like something out of a fairy tale. It’s beautiful, with its picturesque gardens and fascinating history. Francisco Piria’s vision and ambition are clear in every corner of this place.
3. RESERVA DE FAUNA DEL CERRO PAN DE AZÚCAR
This wildlife sanctuary is the place for animal lovers. It’s an educational and enjoyable experience that leaves you with a greater appreciation for Uruguay’s biodiversity.

4. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Piriápolis owes its existence to Francisco Piria, a visionary who dreamed of creating a European-style resort town in Uruguay. His legacy is everywhere, from the iconic landmarks to the very streets of the town. Learning about his life and work adds so much depth to visiting Piriápolis—it’s inspiring to see what one person’s ambition can achieve.

5. PRACTICAL TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT

Getting There: Piriápolis is easy to reach by car or bus from Montevideo or Punta del Este.
Accommodation: There’s something for every budget, but book early if you’re visiting during summer.
Food: Don’t leave without trying the seafood! And of course, try some dulce de leche ice cream! 🙂

6. CONCLUSION

For me, Piriápolis is where I go to slow down and appreciate the simple joys of life. Whether it’s sipping mate by the beach, watching the sunset, playing in the waves, or taking in a breathtaking view, Piriápolis has a way of making you fall in love with it. It’s not flashy or over-the-top—it’s real, it’s beautiful, and it’s waiting for you to discover it!
And there you have it – everything you need to know about Piriápolis!
🙂
